American
or
English
If you have been researching to prepare for the adoption of your puppy, you probably have questions about American and English Labrador types. There is no official distinction between them, but the types do have some recognizable differences in their appearance, size, temperament, and energy levels.

The "American" lab has a slim, muscular, athletic and agile look to their body. Their legs and necks tend to be long and thin, while their heads are narrow and muzzles are long. Their tails are also long and slender but very powerful. These active, intelligent, driven working dogs usually weigh 55-80lbs.

The "English" lab has a heavy, solid look to their bodies with a barrel chest and stocky neck. Their legs are short and thick and they have short "otter" tails. Their heads are blocky with a full face and short muzzle. These characteristics coupled with their tendency to be calmer and less active explain why they love the water and usually weigh 75-100lbs.

So, how do you choose between the two types? You definitely want to become familiar with the differences in the field and show dog types but remember you may not have to choose. Many breeders produce puppies that have a mix of these traits including temperament. We encourage potential owners to do some research and to be honest about which would best fit into your life. It may be helpful to visit your potential puppy to get a feel for their temperament.
