Labradors originated in Newfoundland as a water dog. Over the years breeders have worked to express characteristics of this breed most desired for its use. The "American" Labs have been bred to display traits required for dogs to be successful in the field and "English" Labs were bred to display traits fitting show dogs. Many labs exhibit the genes of both but are said to lean toward one style or another. When choosing a lab, it's all about preference of bloodlines, color, size, temperament and activity level that best fits you and your family.
